UNREAL: FANTASY, STAGED OR CONSTRUCTED PHOTOGRAPHY

This month 1650 Gallery welcomes photographic flights of fancy with the exhibition UNREAL: Staged, Fantasy and Fictitious Photography. Call it what you will, but we like to lump it all under the banner of "constructed imagery"-- which means if you can dream it, we want to see it! With it's roots in 20th Century Pictorialism (itself a construct of Alfred Steiglitz!), the contemporary constructed photograph is coming on strong in the 21st Century. Whether digitally created in Photoshop or shot "in-camera" on physical sets, constructed imagery strives to tell the stories that candid photography cannot.

Current masters of the genre include Philip Di Lorca Corcia, Cindy Sherman, Gregory Crewdson, Sandy Skoglund and Jeff Wall. Is fiction stranger than truth after all? This time at 1650, the answer lies with you! 30 to 35 works will be chosen from submitted photographs to be included in the UNREAL exhibition at 1650 Gallery in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Additional works may also be selected for an online gallery exhibition page.

There is an entry fee of $25 for up to 5 images. Additional entries may be submitted for $5 each.

All accepted entries must submit a high res jpeg (300-360 dpi , minimum size 5x7") to be included in the printed SHOW CATALOG.

We offer free matting and framing for accepted photographs that fit our pre-cut mat sizes for the duration of the exhibition. Photo sizes are 8x10", 11x14" 16x20", or 20x24" . Photos can also be submitted any size on 11x14", 12x16",16x20" or 20x24" paper and be framed without a mat.

Selected artists may choose to offer their work for sale. The gallery retains 50% of the sale price, as well as 9.25% California sales tax. We offer free matting and framing for accepted photographs that fit our pre-cut mat sizes for the duration of the exhibition. We will also print your photo for a nominal fee if you are accepted into the show and would prefer not to mail a print.
