    Depth of Meaning

Online Event - Contests, Juried Art Shows - Acrylic, Ceramics, Crafts, Digital Media, Glass, Mosaic, Illustration, Jewelry, Mixed media, Metalsmithing, Sculpture, Watercolor, Oil, Pastel, Photography, Poetry, Video/Film Art Gallery

CALADAN GALLERY presents a juried exhibition entitled "DEPTH of MEANING". There are several roads this can take: Meaning manifests itself sometimes when we are not focused and searching for it on the conscious level. On the other hand, sometimes we deliberately seek out meaning in a malignant society. Whether on a personal level or one of mass consciousness, once the discovery of meaning comes to the surface, an endless social, mental or emotional discourse takes place. Spirituality or World-Consciousness...the paths of meaning are plentiful. We have been extremely fortunate to be creating an exciting, diverse, and active meeting place for artists. We are averaging over 55,000 viewers a month, and have provided a warm and positive virtual atmosphere since 2003. All mediums except video are eligible. Please go to our website to download prospectus (click on "enter your artwork") OR write to: Caladan Gallery, Box 391939, Cambridge MA 02139 OR call: 617-838-8929 for more information. Deadline for submissions is May 25, 2011.

Dada Post präsentiert Sadie Weis und Geisterschatten:

    Sadie Weis und Geisterschatten

Eröffnung am 14. Mai, 19:00 Uhr

    Ausstellung 15. Mai – 5. Juni, 2011

Dada Post, Nordbahnstraße 10, 13409 Berlin, Germany

    <!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

    Sadie Weis:

    auralswordsilverfuture

Ann Shostrom   Mark Sweeney   Charles Yoder

    Dada Post Presents:

    Sadie Weis and Geisterschatten

    Opening May 14th - 7:00 PM

    May 14th – June 5th, 2011

    Sadie Weis:

    auralswordsilverfuture

Dada Post is pleased to present auralswordsilverfuture, the first Berlin solo exhibition of work by Sadie Weis.

Weis's multi-disciplinary practice is articulated through an explosive dialogue with neon color, urban survival, everyday dreaming, and an unfailing and unflinching desire for something more - a crystalized dream in bright lights and metallic rays.

For auralswordsilverfuture, she uncovers a world in dramatic flux, a transcendent moment, enacting a sparkling representation between languages of painting, print, and sculptural installation.

Central to the exhibition is a portal (sculpture) composed of florescent light and found and altered objects.  This 'other-worldly' gate signifies a spectacular and seismic shift - not to some far-off dimension - but to the purgatorial plight of the right here/right now, a ritualized moment of presence and awareness in a landscape of common unconscious.

The viewers' ceremonial passage to the neon-present is marked by the donning of spray-painted silver shoes to traverse the portal.  The silver sneakers create a dividing line in the gallery, materially and conceptually, between those seeking salvation and those who have passed.

This critical divide takes inspiration from a range of reference points, such as Ursula K. LeGuin's Science Fiction novel, 'The Dispossessed', the poet Roberto Bolano's 'My Life in the Tubes of Survival', the artist's recurring dreams of out-running tornadoes tearing through trailer parks, and the terminal faith of the Heaven's Gate cult.

The work of Sadie Weis is a combination of experimental prototypes with an electric intensity of detail and effect. Her ambitious large-scale paintings involve a frenzied mixture of educated painting and graffiti, cold wax, and simplistic ball point pens, while her smaller pieces employ the printshop technique of silkscreen through a unique evolution of the monotype tradition. Through these processes, she evokes an attitude that straddles the line between allegorical abstraction and the broken imagery of postmodernist intervention.

The world inhabited by Weis exists on the fault-line of urban decay, the neon-apocalypse, and the simultaneous promise of its glorious, vibrant return.

    Geisterschatten:

    (10th Anniversary Gathering)

John Bowman   Lance Cain   Gregory Hilton   Jean Holabird

Ann Shostrom   Mark Sweeney   Charles Yoder

During the tenth anniversary year of the September 11th attacks of 2001 in New York City, Dada Post hosts an exhibition that brings to Berlin a group of artists who lived and worked in this Lower Manhattan (Tribeca) neighborhood, during the 9/11 attacks, and who are still living and working there today. Tribeca is the acronym for: Triangle Below Canal Street.  Which was literally in the shadows of the former World Trade Center towers.

Geisterschatten takes its name from The Ghost Shadows, a Chinese American gang that is prominent in New York City's Chinatown, an adjacent neighborhood to the east of these artist's Tribeca neighborhood.

As a spillover from the SOHO (South of Houston Street) art community, the Tribeca neighborhood as it is famously known today, got its revival (formerly an abandoned warehouse district), largely by the artist who began renovating the area in the late 1960s, as a place to live and make art - which gave the Triangle Below Canal Street a new vigor.

For the Geisterschatten artists, there is still a subconscious shadow in the memory - that recalls what it was like to live in a war zone. The artists whose work continues to evolve in the aftermath of this historic event, considers the relationship of art to lived experience and responds in various ways to the conflicts and contradictions of global reality – while exhibiting a stubbornness to maintain previous established practices.

Dada Post is pleased to present Sadie Weis and Geisterschatten to our Berlin public.
