Artificial Hells: Participatory Art and the Politics of Spectatorship », is the first historical and theoretical overview of socially-engaged participatory art, work that seeks to reconfigure the relationship of artist to audience by collaborating with everyday people as co-producers of a performance-based project.

The book follows the trajectory of twentieth century art and examines key moments in the development of participation as an idea in art, from East and Western Europe, North and South America.  This itinerary takes in Futurism and Dada, Situationism, Czechoslovakian Happenings, Argentinian Conceptualism, the Community Arts Movement, and follows through to contemporary artists such as Thomas Hirschhorn, Tania Bruguera and Jeremy Deller.

A fotografia é o elemento catalisador do processo artístico.

"Fair for Knowledge: American Fauna" (Saturday, 28 July, at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum)

    "Fair for Knowledge: American Fauna"
    Date: Saturday, 28 July 2012, 1–5 pm
Location: Outdoors, on the porch of the former home of the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, Connecticut (map and directions here)
    FREE. No RSVP necessary

Cabinet magazine and the Aldrich Museum are pleased to present "Fair for Knowledge: American Fauna," a program devised to accompany "united states," the suite of exhibitions currently on view at the Aldrich Museum. "American Fauna," the fourth installment of Cabinet's ongoing series of "fairs for knowledge," invites visitors to engage in brief one-on-one conversations with experts about one particular animal found in the United States. The experts (and their animals) include:

    David Brooks (tarpon)
    D. Graham Burnett (dolphin)
    Victor DeMasi (monarch butterfly)
    Michael Klemens (beaver)
    Sina Najafi (NASA chimpanzees)
    Hanna Rose Shell (bison)
    Julie Victoria (bald eagle)
    Adrian Young (the American man)

    ABOUT THE SERIES
Designed to take learning out of the classroom and into unexpected venues, Cabinet's "fairs for knowledge" aim to create bridges between specialists and the general public by encouraging an informal, social, and open mode of learning. Sites for former installments of the series have included a flea market, a restaurant, and a New York City sidewalk.
